Sponge titanium is light gray particles or sponge-shaped titanium metal, is the raw material for manufacturing titanium products and titanium powder. Almost all the sponge titanium is produced by the Kroll process, which reduces titanium tetrachloride with metal magnesium, making the ilmenite into titanium tetrachloride, and reacts with metal magnesium to get sponge-like porous “sponge titanium”. At present, the world’s production of sponge titanium countries concentrated in Japan, the United States, Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and China and a few other countries, all factories choose the magnesium reduction – distillation combined process. The purity % (mass) of spongiform titanium produced by the metal thermal reduction method is generally 99.1-99.7, the total amount of impurity element % (mass) is 0.3 ~ 0.9, the oxygen % (mass) is 0.06 ~ 0.20, and the hardness (HB) is 100 ~ 157. According to GB/T 2524, there are six grades of titanium sponge from 0-5, corresponding to MHT-100 to MHT-200 according to purity (The number 100 means that the Brinell hardness of titanium sponge is not greater than 100).
